Elk can be pale gray, tan, or brown. They have thin legs and a thick neck. Their lower fur is usually dark brown. Their rear end is light tan. Adult elk are about 5 feet high and 9 feet long.
Elk have colonized the INEEL during the past 20 years, numbers are rapidly increasing, and they are apparently here to stay. Recent wildland fires on the INEEL may cause an even larger influx of animals, potentially making the INEEL a more important wintering area for elk and likely resulting in more year-round elk on the INEEL.
