Research at the INL

The INL is designated:

A National Environmental Research Park

A National Important  Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy and National Audubon Society

An irreplaceable land in the Columbia Basin Ecoregion by the Nature Conservancy

Sagebrush-Steppe Ecosystem Reserve by the Natural Areas  Association

The INL occupies one of the largest tract of relatively undisturbed sagebrush-steppe rangeland in the United States. The land provides an important habitat for resident and migrating wildlife.  Over 40 species of mammals and 230 species of birds have been found on the INL.  The INL also supports over 420 species of flowering plants.  Because of the inherent ecological benefits of such a large tract of protected and relatively undisturbed habitat, the scientific community recognizes this acreage as an exciting opportunity for research.

ESER conducts environmental research on the INL that benefits the Department of Energy-Idaho Operations Office by providing data and information to support decision-making and regulatory compliance.  This research enhances the INL's ability to develop and apply enduring solutions to environmental challenges.  The scope of the research is determined by ecological risk assessment results, long-term monitoring needs and land use issues at the INL.

The ESER team also conducts innovative research that has made the INL a center for state-of-the-art ecological and environmental activities.
