Exploring the effect of black-billed magpie presence at bird feeders

School:    Sample Elementary
Latitude:
    48
Longitude:    112
Hypothesis:    Because of magpies agressive nature, there will be less birds feeding when magpies are present than on days when magpies are not present.
Materials used:    Suet, sunflower seeds, bread crumbs, hamburger, the ground
Experiment design 1. We will feed the birds on the ground by the basketball hoop. 2. We will put out food and count the number of birds for 15 minutes. 3. We will feed the birds at the same time every day. 4. We will feed the birds different kinds of food.
Constant variables:   Same place, same time every day.
Changing variables:   Different types of food
Number of days 15
Number of days magpies were present:   8
Average number of birds observed when magpies were present:   4
Average number of birds observed when magpies were not present:  11
Was hypothesis supported: Yes
