Boise
Urban Garden School
The Boise Urban Garden School (BUGS) envisions a community of critical
thinkers and problem solvers who will help build and promote a
strong local food economy and find personal meaning and purpose by
exploring connectivity with the natural world. The organic garden
provides an authentic learning environment through which children
and adults engage issues of ecology, local food economies,
sustainability, nutrition, health and literacy.
In the seven week garden and literacy summer program, BUGS students learn
how to grow food crops in an arid environment where water must be
conserved; how to utilize integrated pest management systems which
eliminate the need for chemical pesticides; how to minimize their
ecological footprints and support a local living economy by eating
foods grown closer to home; how to market the produce they grow; and
how to prepare delicious, healthy meals from the fruits of their
labor.
This October we launched a pilot fall/spring workshop series for
four local public school classrooms and teachers on small scale
gardening strategies for urban backyards and schools. Within the
context of square foot gardening, container gardening and raised bed
gardening, this series of four workshops teaches garden preparation,
soil and compost, seed propagation, planting and garden maintenance.

Mapping
Exhibit at the Discovery Center of Idaho
The goal of Mapping, a
new exhibition at the Discovery Center of Idaho, is to put mapping
tools, from sextants to software, in the hands of visitors and let
them explore the science and technology of mapping. From compasses
to Google Earth, Mapping will show the developments in map making
and the diversity of data that can be incorporated. Mapping will
showcase a myriad of maps, such as; digital, printed, relief,
overlays, topographical and many others. There is even a chance to
fight a virtual forest fire or explore the biodiversity of the Boise
River.
Mapping will also explore the tools and techniques associated
with mapping from surveying to satellites. Ultimately, this
exhibition will enable visitors to develop a deeper insight of how
multifaceted the science of mapping is. Mapping is designed to be
hands-on, encouraging engagement from our visitors and enabling them
to experience the thrill of making discoveries.
So bring your family or school group down for a visit. More
information is available from our website
http://scidaho.org or by calling
208.343.9895. Field trip subsidies available for Title 1 schools.
(Open January 11 through June 8)

IdEEA is proud to be a part of
the No Child Left InsideSM Coalition – a powerful national
coalition of more than 144 groups pushing for increased federal support
for environmental education.
We joined the NCLISM Coalition in 2007 because we
believe strongly in the value of environmental education. We must do a
better job of teaching young people about their natural world and the
challenges it faces. And nobody can dispute that these challenges are
growing increasingly complex.
We also appreciate how much kids enjoy getting outside and
experiencing and learning about their environment firsthand. These kinds
of lessons inspire kids and often help them do better in school.
The NCLISM Coalition supports new funding to help states
develop rigorous environmental education programs for the schools,
funding that would be included as part of the reauthorized No Child Left
Behind law. To date, the Coalition has found strong support in Congress,
but 2008 will be a critical year for the Coalition’s goals.

Coalition – visit www.eenclb.org

Workplace Giving Campaign
Many employers conduct annual giving campaigns, which allow their
employees to make charitable contributions to organizations of their
choosing. These donations can be orchestrated through various methods
including payroll contribution. The human resources department can let
you know whether such a program exists at your workplace.
If you are a federal employee, workplace giving is easy through the
Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). During your office's next fund drive,
please designate the Idaho Environmental Education Association (IdEEA)
as your beneficiary.
Employees of non-federal agencies and companies can write in the
Idaho Environmental Education Association on your pledge form (usually
monitored by United Way).
If you do not have a workplace giving campaign at your place of
business but would like to have one, please call Choices in Community
Giving at 208-336-1033.
Thank you for your support of IdEEA!
